Metzger Attemps Motorcycle Backflip Over Caesars Palace Fountains
On New Year’s Eve 1967, motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel attempted to jump over the Fountains at Caesars Palace. It was unsuccessful and Knievel was made famous by the many injuries he suffered as a result. Just shy of thirty years later, Freestyle Motocross superstar Mike “The Godfather” Metzger is hoping his odds are better as he attempts to set a world record by making the jump successfully — while doing a backflip on his cycle.
On May 4 at 5:30 p.m., Metzger will make the jump which will be aired live on ESPN (8:30 p.m. for those watching on the East Coast). The jump is part of a publicity promotion for both the upcoming Mission Impossible: 3 movie (which is released the following day) and as part of Caesars Palace’s 40th Anniversary.
In addition to covering the jump, ESPN will air a one hour show showing the evolution of the stunts used in making the three Mission Impossible films, as well as offering a retrospective of past historic motorcycle jumps, including Knievel’s. His son Robbie did successfully complete the fountain jump in 1989, but if Metzger makes it, it will be the first successful backflip attempt.
This event is free to the public, but for a good viewing spot, I would suggest arriving early.
