Race Book Lingo: “Across”
If you walk up to a race book window and bet five dollars “across” on a horse, you are making a $15 bet. The bet you’re making is $5 for the horse to win, $5 for the horse to place (come in top two) and $5 for the horse to show (come in top three). The term “across” is short for “across the board;” the “board” means three bets: win, place and show.
