Bob Dylan and Merle Haggard at The Aladdin

bob dylan & merle haggard at the aladdinBob Dylan and Merle Haggard are both considered rebel musical icons who have helped change the face of American music. This spring the two are teaming up for another leg of their joint tour, which will include a stop at The Aladdin on April 7.

Dylan became a poster child for the folk music movement in the 1960s, drawing upon such influences at Woody Guthrie and bluesman Robert Johnson. Though his songs have been remade by thousands of other musicians over the years, there’s no mistaking Dylan’s distinct vocals and use of harmonica.

Last fall, No Direction Home, a documentary about the folk-rock legend directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese was released on dvd, with a companion soundtrack. Dylan himself serves as narrator for the filmed biography that traces his influence on music from 1959 – 1966. He is currently working on a new album, which will be his first in five years.

Haggard helped pioneer a form of country music in the 60s called the “Bakersfield Sound” — a mixture of traditional country and western swing, with a touch of rockabilly electric guitar. He built his reputation by singing songs of the common man and his trials and tribulations in life. His best known song is “Okie From Muskogee” but he has had a total of 38 #1 hit singles over the course of his career. In 1994, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and he is currently touring behind his latest album, Chicago Wind.
