Hash House a Go Go Serves Up Tasty Food For Healthy Appetites

Just west of the Strip, about five miles down Sahara Avenue, lies a restaurant that will definitely satisfy. Not only with the taste and quality of the food, but the sheer size of the portions served.

That place is Hash House a Go Go.

The restaurant serves what it calls “twisted farm food” in a large brick red building decorated to resemble a midwestern barn. The “farm food” portion refers to the Americana menu offerings, and the “twisted” part, I think, refers to how this food is served…in oversized bowls and platters filled to the edges.

My friend and I chose to dine there midweek around 11am, and were seated immediately at a table in the middle of the main room. We lucked out because I’ve heard the line to be seated can get pretty long, especially on weekends. There was also available seating in the back room and a side alcove. Sunlight streamed into the main room, gleaming off the steel tables.

Even though they were beginning to serve lunch, we opted to try some of the breakfast options off the menu.

I ordered the Chorizo Jalapeño Hash ($12.95), a very tasty medley of mildly spicy chorizo sausage, jalapeños, red peppers and onions served in a cast iron skillet atop a pile of breakfast potato wedges that were crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. Slices of melon and orange, scrambled eggs and a biscuit accompanied the hash. Unfortunately the biscuit was a little too dense and dry. A search on the table for something to top the biscuit revealed a small pot of strawberry preserves. They helped, but the biscuit was still a low point to an otherwise great meal.

My friend had the Tractor Driver Combo ($9.95), consisting of two Eggs with a choice of bacon sausage or potatoes, as well as a choice of flapjacks, a waffle, griddled french toast, or, for $1 more, a specialty flapjack. She chose to go with the brown sugar banana specialty flavor, and it was an excellent choice. Served on a platter, the pancake was over 12 inches in diameter, light and thin, with chunks of banana throughout. The brown sugar also gave it a crispy outer coating, which provided a nice crunchy counterpoint to the fluffy center.

Waiting for our food, I watched the waiters serving other tables. Passing by me were burgers so thick they used a steak knife, not a toothpick, to secure the bun. Salads in bowls big enough to serve two. Platters and platters of comfort food, all in quantities to feed two or three…or just one really big appetite. If you walk away from the table still hungry, it’s your own fault.

Most breakfast and lunch offerings range between $7 and $14, with dinner running between $7 and $24. They also charge a $2.50 fee if you split an entree, unless you order a side to go with it. We used a Restaurant.com gift certificate for $10 off a bill of $20 or more, bringing our total bill, for two entrees with coffee and water for drinks, to just under $20 with tax and tip.

It should be noted that the restaurant closes midday, after the lunch service, for a few hours to set up for dinner. Dinner service is also not available on Sundays. Full operating hours are listed in the details section below.

Hash House a Go Go is a great option for those who are tired of the buffets and want to get out of the Strip area for a hearty meal at a decent price. I can’t wait to go back and explore the rest of the menu. Who’s hungry?
