R.I.P. Boardwalk
I have to admit that everytime I had to walk by the gigantic clown head opening, I got a little creeped out. But I still felt a twinge of sadness this week when the Boardwalk Hotel on the Strip finally came tumbling down. Located between the Bellagio and the Monte Carlo, the 16-story building was brought down Tuesday morning (May 9) at 2:30 a.m.
KVBC has video on their website of the demolition, as does KLAS, which has some great still shots of the demolition in progress. It took nearly 1,000 strategically placed explosives to bring the building down neatly between the existing neighboring casinos.
After 38 years of accommodating visitors to Vegas, the hotel was imploded so MGM-Mirage could use the land to build its $5 billion City Center project. The development will include luxury condos, hotels, a casino and a retail area. Phase one is scheduled to open in 2010.
So how do you feel about the loss of Boardwalk? Have you stayed there? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think.
