Hairspray Gets Axed at The Luxor
The hit musical Hairspray debuted at The Luxor less than four months ago and word comes that the show is already set to close. Earlier this week, the cast was ready to hit the stage when they were told that this Sunday, June 11, would be their last day at the resort.
Granted, ticket sales for shows all over town are slow as Cirque’s new Beatles’-inspired show, LOVE, is selling tickets for its debut shows almost faster than the machines can spit them out. But Hairspray has been experiencing problems packing the theater off and on since it’s opening in February. They even brought in Harvey Fierstein, from the original Tony Award-winning Broadway production of the show, to try to energize interest in the Vegas production.
But on the heels of new cast members Eddie Mekka (“Laverne & Shirley”) and Paul C. Vogt (“MADtv”) joining the show, the entire cast learns they’ll have to hit the audition bricks again looking for more work. I wish them all the best of luck finding new shows to shine in.
No word yet, from the Luxor, as to what they’ll be bringing in to replace the musical.
