Summer of Ska Tour Blasts Into House of Blues
Ska had its basis in the Jamaican music scene but once it reached the American shores, it mixed with pop and punk to form an upbeat musical style that is part punk, part reggae and a whole lot of horns. Several ska bands have joined forces for the Summer of Ska tour, including Catch 22 and Voodoo Glow Skulls.
Catch 22 has been involved in the ska revolution for ten years. Their current album, Permanent Revolution, explores the live of Leon Trotsky, the father of Marxist theory and leader of the Bolshevik revolution in Russia. That’s right, Russian politics set to danceable punk reggae.
Voodoo Glow Skulls have been around just as long — sixteen years, in fact. Their songs are sung in both English and Spanish, reflecting their Mexican roots. The band has influenced a host of other bands, including Sublime and No Doubt, and their newest cd, Adicción, Tradición, y Revolución, pulls no punches with its politically charged lyrics and ska-core sound.
Also on the tour are Big D And The Kids Table, Suburban Legends and Westbound Train. This is an early low-dough all-ages show.
