1946: The Famous Flamingo
Mob-man-turned-hotelier Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel named his $6 million treasure, the Flamingo, after his girlfriend, Virginia Hill, who was a long-legged redhead. Sadly, it rained the day of the grand opening and many on the Hollywood guest list didn’t show. The Miami-themed resort didn’t catch on in the coming weeks, and Bugsy was murdered in Beverly Hills six months later.
